Bone Wars

Public humiliation? Theft? Dynamiting each other’s quarries?! Nothing’s off the table during….THE BONE WARS! Join Nick Wiersum, Curator of Education, as we discuss over coffee the early days of American paleontology, in particular, the lifelong feud between Othniel Marsh and Thomas Drinker Cope. Between the two of them, they are responsible for a number of amazing finds and dozens of dinosaur species we know and love today–including Triceratops and Stegosaurus–but what they did to get them was absolutely outrageous.

What Jurassic Park Got Right

Don’t you just love Jurassic Park? The acid-spitting Dilophosaurus? The clever Velociraptor? The massively impressive T. rex that can’t see you if you don’t move? Well that’s all nonsense. Join Curator of Education Nick Wiersum with a cup of coffee and talk about what the Jurassic Park movies got right, how they’ve reignited a global passion for paleontology, and then have your childhood dinosaur dreams dashed as he completely ruins this movie franchise with science.

What is a Dinosaur?

Have you ever wondered what sets dinosaurs apart from other prehistoric creatures? Many animals from Earth’s ancient past are often mistaken for dinosaurs, but not all of them meet the scientific criteria. During this engaging session, participants will dive into the fascinating world of dinosaurs and discover what truly makes an animal a dinosaur. While exploring the skeletons on display in our main exhibit, you’ll learn the defining characteristics scientists use to classify dinosaurs. The experience continues in the lower level of the museum, where you’ll uncover the tools and techniques paleontologists use in the field and take part in a simulated dinosaur dig. This program is perfect for adults who want to explore the science of dinosaurs in a relaxed, interactive, and conversational setting.

Coffee and Conversations programs range from $12-20 per person for a standard one-hour session, which includes a self-guided exploration of the museum exhibits. For an even more immersive experience, upgrade to a guided tour through the exhibits for an additional fee.
