SUMMARY:Museum Book Club: Our First Civil War: Patriots and Loyalists in the American Revolution by H.W. Brands
DESCRIPTION:George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were the unlikeliest of rebels. Washington in the 1770s stood at the apex of Virginia society. Franklin was more successful still\, having risen from humble origins to world fame. John Adams might have seemed a more obvious candidate for rebellion\, being of cantankerous temperament. Even so\, he revered the law. Yet all three men became rebels against the British Empire that fostered their success. \nThursday\, August 27  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Discussion led by: Emily Mentzel  |  Free\, registration appreciated  |  Register Here

SUMMARY:Museum Book Club: Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips
DESCRIPTION:In 1874\, in the wake of the War\, erasure\, trauma\, and namelessness haunt civilians and veterans\, renegades and wanderers\, freedmen and runaways. Twelve-year-old ConaLee\, the adult in her family for as long as she can remember\, finds herself on a buckboard journey with her mother\, Eliza\, who hasn’t spoken in more than a year. They arrive at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia\, delivered to the hospital’s entrance by a war veteran who has forced himself into their world. There\, far from family\, a beloved neighbor\, and the mountain home they knew\, they try to reclaim their lives. \nThursday\, October 29  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Discussion led by: Emily Mentzel  |  Free\, registration appreciated  |  Register Here

SUMMARY:Museum Book Club: Written in the Waters by Tara Roberts
DESCRIPTION:When Tara Roberts first caught sight of a photograph at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History depicting the scuba and underwater archaeology group Diving With a Purpose\, it called out to her. Here were Black women and men strapping on masks\, fins\, and tanks to explore Atlantic Ocean waters along the coastlines of Africa\, North America\, and Central America\, seeking the wrecks of slave ships long lost in time. Inspired\, Roberts joined them—and started on a path of discovery more challenging and personal than she could ever have imagined. \nThursday\, December 17  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Discussion led by: Emily Mentzel  |  Free\, registration appreciated  |  Register Here
