SUMMARY:Photography and the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 24  |  10:00am – 2:30pm  |  Instructor: David Rambow  |  $24 ($30 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nOne Tintype Sitting: $72 ($90 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nJoin Historian and wet-plate photographer David Rambow for a deep dive into Civil War photography. Learn about wet-plate photography\, tintypes\, carte de vista\, and what these artifacts reveal about the era. Following the lecture\, you can have your own tintype portrait taken by Rambow to cherish as a piece of photography history. \nThe introduction of photography enabled the documentation of army camps and battlefields\, exposing viewers to the unfiltered truths of war. These images depicted the brutal aftermath of conflict\, evoking a palpable sense of reality and immediacy that shattered any idealized perceptions of war’s grandeur. \n*The lecture and tintype sitting experience are separate ticketed events. Each person in your group should purchase a ticket for the lecture. If you wish to include a tintype sitting\, only one tintype seating ticket is required per group.

SUMMARY:The Atlanta Campaign: Missed Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 12  |  1:00pm – 3:00pm  |  $24 ($30 for non-members)  |  Instructor: Dave Powell  |  Register Here \n“I’ve got Joe Johnston Dead!” Or so Sherman is said to have exclaimed upon hearing that James B. McPherson had seized Resaca. Famously\, that turned out not to be true\, one of the great “lost opportunities” of the entire war. But in fact\, there were other such turning points in the first month of the campaign\, each perhaps more significant than Resaca. On May 16\, Sherman’s armies stumbled crossing the Oostenaula River\, offering Johnston a chance to damage one or more of the Federal corps; and at Dallas\, McPherson hesitated again when facing just a single small Confederate division. What would have happened if either of these moments had gone differently?

SUMMARY:Civil War Museum Media Club: Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force That Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War by Jon Grinspan
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 22  |  6:30pm – 8:00pm  |  $8 ($10 for non-members)  | Instructor: Doug Dammann  |  Register Here \nJon Grinspan’s new book explores a political group known as the Wide Awakes and how their actions influenced the presidential election of 1860 and the coming of the Civil War.  The group began as fired-up young Northerners who acted as bodyguards to defend Republican stump speakers from frequent verbal and physical attacks. The idea spread and hundreds of thousands of young people organized into boisterous\, uniformed\, torch-bearing brigades. These Wide Awakes–mostly working-class Americans in their twenties–became one of the largest\, most spectacular\, and most influential political movements in our history. To some\, their actions demonstrated the power of a rising majority promoting political ideas. To others\, it looked like a paramilitary force training to invade the South. Within a year\, the nation would be at war with itself\, and many on both sides would point to the Wide Awakes as the mechanism that got them there. \nParticipants in the Media Club are invited to read the book before the meeting and to come prepared to share their thoughts on its themes in an informal and thought provoking discussion.

SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture: From Prison Guards to Prisoners: The Story of the Nineteenth Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 8  |  12:00pm – 1:00pm  |  Speaker: Larry Desotell \nThe presentation will track the history of this little known regiment from Wisconsin. After forming and training at Camp Utley in Racine\, the regiment was stationed at Camp Randall to guard Confederate prisoners sent there after the Battle of Island No. 10 in April 1962. The talk will then concentrate on the regiment’s battle history\, as members of the VII Corps and later the Army of the James\, and how almost the entire regiment was killed\, wounded\, or taken prisoner at the Second Battle of Fair Oaks. These prisoners\, who once served as guards\, now tasted prison life from a different angle. \nLarry Desotell was born and raised in Racine\, Wisconsin and graduated from St. Catherine’s High School. He received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin and a M.A. in Political Science from Northern Arizona University. He taught United States History and Political Science at Arrowhead High School for 32 years. He is the author of “The Captured\, the Sick\, and the Dead: Confederate Soldiers At Camp Randall\,” (2020) and “The Confederate Rest of the Story\,” published in the Wisconsin Magazine of History (Spring 2021).
