SUMMARY:Exhibit Closing - Rooted Visions
DESCRIPTION:At times\, artists seem to create as if a force within is driving their messages regardless of access to formal training\, traditional art materials\, or patrons. They “make-do” through use of found objects and ordinary materials\, memory\, and spirituality. Their art transcends the suppression and unimaginable hardships of the maker and envisions possibilities for a better\, transformative world. Rooted Visions features works of art by twenty-five Southern Black artists who found ways to tell visionary stories through art in a world that often creates boundaries. \nCloses January 7th!

SUMMARY:He Had No Army: The Hornets Nest at Shiloh
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 18  |  1pm – 2:30pm  |  Instructor: Tom Arliskas  |  $12 ($15 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nAuthor Tom Arliskas’ workshop will consider how the Federal Army was able to hold the position of the infamous Hornet’s Nest at the center of the Union lines for 6 hours during the first day of the Battle of Shiloh while the rest of the Union Forces fell back to the Tennessee Riverbank. Arliskas will use the words of those who were there that day–Generals Benjamin Prentiss\, W.H.L. Wallace\, and Steven A. Hurlbut\, their Brigade Commanders and their Colonels–to tell what happened. Were the Confederate forces untrained and poorly armed as described by their commanding General Albert Sidney Johnston? Was it the fighting spirit of the Western Soldier or was it Rifles vs. Smoothbores and Artillery that ruled the day?

SUMMARY:Kindness in a Cup of Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 23  |  6:30pm – 7:30pm  |  Presented by Doug Dammann and Steve Acker  \nOne of the items that brought together the Civil War soldiers and sometimes led to moments of civility and understanding was coffee.   No single item of food or drink meant as much to Civil War soldiers.  They talked about coffee\, wrote about coffee\, and dreamed about coffee.  Based on first hand written accounts\, this program describes the different methods Civil War soldiers obtained\, brewed and shared their coffee and how these actions sometimes brought them brief moments of peace\, comfort and kindness. \nEach year\, the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism hosts a week affiliated with continuing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of kindness and community. In 2025\, Kindness Week programming will occur from January 17-25.
