DESCRIPTION:Old Abe and the 8th Wisconsin \nFriday\, September 19  |  2:00pm – 3:30pm  \nOld Abe\, the eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry\, traveled with the regiment and was present at over 30 battles and skirmishes that its soldiers participated in. By the end of the war\, Old Abe was the most well-known animal mascot of the Civil War. At this SPARK! program\, the group will learn the history of Old Abe and see pictures of him during and after the war. To celebrate his legacy\, our group will also make bird-food streamers out of pine cones and apple slices to feed our local feathered friends. \n\nLeaf Prints \nFriday\, October 17  |  2:00pm – 3:30pm  \nOur group will celebrate the coming of fall by collecting leaves and making decorative leaf prints. \n\nExhibit: Women and Water: Woven Portraits from Around the World at the Kenosha Public Museum \nFriday\, November 21 |  2:00pm – 3:30pm \nOur SPARK! group will tour the Kenosha Public Museum exhibit\, Women and Water: Woven Portraits from Around the World then make a woven bookmark using yarn and creativity. \n\nChristmas Candy Houses \nFriday\, December 19  |  2:00pm – 3:30pm  \nBring your creativity to make a holiday-inspired house out of graham crackers\, treats\, and candy. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture: The 6th Wisconsin and the Antietam Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 12  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Presented by Dr. James Marten \nReimagining one of the oldest genres of Civil War history\, Dr. Marten’s program will explore the Antietam Campaign through the lens of a single regiment\, the Sixth Wisconsin. One of the core units of the famed Iron Brigade\, the Sixth was organized in July 1861 and mustered out in the summer of 1865\, playing major roles at Antietam as well as Second Manassas\, Gettysburg\, and the Overland campaign of 1864. \nDr. James Marten\, Professor Emeritus of Marquette University\, has written\, edited\, or co-edited over twenty books in two different fields: The Civil War era and the histories of children and youth. His books include The Children’s Civil War (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press\, 1998)\, a Choice “Outstanding Academic Title” and winner of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Book Award\, as well as more recent books on Civil War veterans\, including Sing Not War: The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans in Gilded Age America (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press\, 2011)\, America’s Corporal: James Tanner in War and Peace\, a short biography of the disabled Civil War veteran and activist James “Corporal” Tanner (Athens: University of Georgia Press\, 2014)\, and Buying and Selling Civil War Memory in Gilded Age America (Athens: University of Georgia Press\, 2021)\, co-edited with Caroline E. Janney. \nHis latest book is The Sixth Wisconsin and the Long Civil War: The Biography of a Regiment (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press\, 2025)\, explores the war-time experiences and the long-term effects of the Civil War on a regiment that fought in one of the most famous units in the Union army—the Iron Brigade.

His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army\, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes. \nAward-winning historian Ronald C. White’s cradle-to-grave biography of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain examines Chamberlain from his upbringing in rural Maine to his tenacious\, empathetic military leadership and his influential postwar public service\, exploring a question that still plagues so many veterans: How do you make a civilian life of meaning after having experienced the extreme highs and lows of war? \nMedia Club attendees are encouraged to read the book before the meeting and come prepared to share their views and opinions on it in an open forum.

(If the sun does  not cooperate\, we will use a special light indoors.)

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 16  |  10:30am – 12:30pm  |  Instructor: Kathy Laybourn  |  $80 ($100 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nHave you ever made art by experimenting with melting crayons when you were a kid? This workshop is designed for anyone who would like to be introduced to the “cold wax” encaustic method.  Students will learn to add a soft\, beeswax mix into oil paint which is applied to an encaustic board and melted with a heat gun.  Successive layers of paint can be built up and mixed media elements can also be added to the layers to create both representational and abstract pieces of art. All supplies included in workshop price.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 8  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Presented by: Dr. Steve Fratt \nSome have seen the Civil War as the first modern war due to the introduction of new technologies. They also mention that sadly\, the casualties on the battlefield were caused by employing obsolete tactics against these new technologies. Our guest will explain how the American Civil War fits within the era of modern warfare and how the tactics used were appropriate for the last musket war of the nineteenth century. \nDr. Steve Fratt is Professor of History – Emeritas who taught for 30 years at Trinity International University in Deerfield\, Illinois. His perspective on the Civil War is uniquely informed by his study of the historical sources\, his articles and publications\, 25 years of experience in the field as a reenactor (including 7 years of commanding the Federal Army in Chicago)\, and his design of tabletop miniature games of “war college” quality.
