SUMMARY:Workshop: Along the Keenesaw Line
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 17  |  1:00pm – 2:30pm  |  Presented by: Mr. Dave Powell  |  $20 ($25 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nThis class will examine the fighting at Kennesaw Mountain between June 21 and June 27\, 1864\, including the battles of Kolb’s Farm\, June 22\, and the Federal attacks against Pigeon and Cheatham Hills on June 27. Both actions are easily misunderstood as to intentions\, planning\, and execution. Johnston took a significant risk in transferring Hood’s Corps from the right to the left before the fight at Kolb’s farm\, while Sherman’s intent on June 27 has never been fully explored. \nDavid A. Powell is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute (1983) with a BA in history. He has published numerous articles in various magazines\, and more than fifteen historical simulations of different battles. For many years David’s focus has been on the epic battle of Chickamauga\, and he is nationally recognized for his tours of that important battlefield and for publishing six books on that campaign\, including The Chickamauga Campaign Trilogy completed in 2016. Dave has also written on the battle of New Market\, co-authored The Tullahoma Campaign with renowned historian Eric Wittenberg\, and published The Impulse of Victory: Ulysses S. Grant at Chattanooga. Both the latter two books appeared in 2020. His current project is a five-volume study of the Atlanta Campaign. The Atlanta Campaign\, Volume One: Dalton to Cassville\, May 1-19\, 1864 was published in July 2024\, with Volume 2 following in October 2025.

SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture: Lee Beseiged
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 9  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Presented by: Mr. John Horn \nThe nine-month siege of Petersburg was the longest continuous operation of the Civil War. Large-scale Union “offensives”—grand maneuvers that triggered some of the large-scale battles—broke the monotony of siege warfare. John Horn’s program and book\, Lee Beseiged\, provide explanations for the context and consequences of every decision and are grounded in hundreds of primary sources and supported by 40 original maps. His new book is the first to put Grant’s second effort into its proper perspective—not only in the context of Petersburg’s siege and the Civil War\, but in the context of warfare’s history. \nChicago native John Horn majored in English and Latin at New College (Sarasota\, Florida) and has practiced law around Chicago since graduating Columbia Law School in New York in 1976. In addition to many articles\, he has written three other books about Petersburg\, Virginia’s soldiers\, and the siege of that city\, and co-edited another.

SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture: Civil War Railroads and Their Tactics
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 12  |  12pm – 1pm  |  Presented by: Charlie Banks \nOne of the aspects that makes the American Civil War one of the first modern wars was the use of railroads. Railroads were vital lifelines for armies because they were the fastest and most efficient way to transport soldiers and supplies. Because of this\, major campaigns such as Chattanooga\, Atlanta\, Richmond\, Petersburg\, and Corinth were fought within 20 miles of a rail line or major rail hub. Mr. Banks’ presentation will show how railroads brought about changes to military logistics and tactics that carried on to the major conflicts that followed the Civil War. \nCharles (Charlie) Banks is a member of the  Northern Illinois Civil War Round Table and a founding member of the McHenry County Civil War Round Table. He has a deep interest in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and its subsidiaries. Besides his interests in the Civil War\, he also enjoys antiquing with his wife\, Mary\, and building his model railroad.

SUMMARY:Civil War Media Club: The Mexican-American War Experiences of Twelve Civil War Generals
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 9  |  6:30pm – 8pm  |  Instructor: Doug Dammann  |  $8 ($10 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nLong overshadowed by the American Civil War\, the Mexican-American War (1846–1848) has received significantly less attention from historians\, partly because of its questionable origin and controversial outcome. The contributors to this volume\, however\, argue that the Mexican-American War was a formative experience for the more than three hundred future Civil War generals who served in it as lower-grade officers. The Mexican War was the first combat experience for many of them\, a laboratory that equipped a generation of young officers with practical lessons in strategy\, tactics\, logistics\, and interpersonal relationships that they would use later to command forces during the Civil War. \nMedia Club attendees are encouraged to read the book before meeting and come prepared to share their views and opinions on it in an open forum.
