SUMMARY:Exhibit: Printmaking – Pop Culture of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:June 15\, 2024 – August 18\, 2024 \nDuring the Civil War\, printed images had the power to influence perceptions and popular opinion\, equal to today’s visual and digital media. The quick rise of popular media during the Civil War had a powerful and lasting impact on our country. This special exhibit of prints from the collection of the Civil War Museum shows the war as it was seen through the most important media of the time\, the printed page. \nThe Civil War was America’s first illustrated war. At that time\, the only view most Americans had of their country—and indeed\, the World—came to them through the rapidly growing business of printed media. The war could not be seen from afar by any other means.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Transparent Watercolor Society of America's 48th Annual Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:View the 80+ works of watercolor artists using a technique known as “transparent watercolor”. According to TWSA this technique is described as: “All watercolor pigments applied in a transparent manner allow light to penetrate the layers of glazes and reflect back through the pigments from the paper below. The whites are brilliant paper left unpainted. This light\, reflecting off the white of the paper\, makes the medium work.” \nOn view until August 4th.

SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture Series: A New Look: Gainesville and Brawner Farm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 9  |  12:00pm – 1:00pm  |  Speaker: Lance Herdegen \nThe Iron Brigade’s opening battle came August 28\, 1862 on the John Brawner farm near Gainesville\, Virginia. The story has been told before\, but never from a fog of war view with one author writing of the Union side and another from the Confederate. There is much to learn about command decisions both successful and failures. Lance Herdegen\, who wrote the Iron Brigade account\, tells what he discovered.

SUMMARY:Illinois Holds the Key: The Vicksburg Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, August 13 and 20  |  6:00pm – 8:00pm  |  Presenter: Mr. Robert Girardi  |  $24 ($30 for non-members)  |  Register Here \nPresident Abraham Lincoln remarked\, “Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket.”  He recognized that control of the Mississippi River was a strategic goal for both sides during the Civil War and as the Confederate strongpoints between Cairo\, Illinois\, and New Orleans fell\, one by one\, Vicksburg and Port Hudson stood as the last remaining obstacles to Federal dominance of the river. \nIf we consider that to be true\, then Illinois held that key. During the course of the campaign against Vicksburg\, Illinois sent more men to fight than any other state. The forces from the Prairie State\, numbering 36\,325 made up fully 20% of Grant’s Army. Illinois sent 56 Infantry regiments\, 10 cavalry regiments and 15 batteries to the campaign\, a total of 79 units. Leadership in the campaign was also heavily represented by Illinois men. U.S. Grant\, John A. McClernand\, John A. Logan and a host of other Illinois officers facilitated the victory. \nWhether it was leadership\, manpower\, supplies\, or naval support\, Illinois led the way to victory at Vicksburg. \nRobert I. Girardi will discuss the important role that Illinois played in the Vicksburg Campaign in a two-part program that discusses the soldiers’ and leaders’ participation. Several battles and multiple personalities and events will be highlighted throughout the sessions.
