SUMMARY:Sensory Friendly Day
DESCRIPTION:Sensory Friendly Days give visitors of all ages with complex developmental disabilities\, sensory sensitivities\, or on the autism spectrum a safe\, comfortable environment to explore the museum exhibits during special hours before the museum opens to the general public. Where possible\, our lights will be dimmed and the sound turned off. Signage will be posted for those areas in which we are unable to turn off the sound or there may be other sensory triggers. Trained staff will be available to help visitors navigate the museum and offer supportive resources (noise-cancelling headphones\, fidgets\, weighted blankets\, quiet spaces)\, as well as opportunities for sensory engagement during your exploration of the museum.

Each of the six sessions will begin with a demonstration showcasing a technique of the day. Students are instructed on color mixing\, application and removal\, brush strokes\, and instruction on the various papers and mediums in a relaxed environment devoted to the students’ personal styles. SUMMARY:Second Friday Lecture: Vicksburg After the Fall
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 12  |  12:00pm – 1:00pm  |  Speaker: Gene Eric Salecker \nWith the capture of Vicksburg in July 1863\, the Bluff City became a Union citadel within the Confederacy\, accessible only via the Mississippi River. Turned into a major Union supply base\, Vicksburg was the main starting point for a number of Union expeditions or raids throughout the rest of the war. At the same time\, the city became a haven for thousands of liberated enslaved people. And at the very end of the war\, Vicksburg became a way station for Union ex-prisoners-of-war being sent back home from Andersonville and other Confederate prisons. On May 12\, you will hear “the rest of the story” concerning the city Abraham Lincoln famously called “the Key” to the Confederacy.

Students will twine the bottom to reach about 12″. The Sides are woven with natural and dyed reed. A perfect basket for any table setting.
