From Keshena to Kenosha and Beyond: The Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin

October 18, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join David Grignon, Menominee Tribal Director of Historic Preservation, at the Southwest Library as he speaks on the past, present, and future of the tribe, as a First Nation whose ancestral home has always been within the boundaries of the state of Wisconsin. The Menominee tribe is among the few tribes in Wisconsin whose origin stories, burial and other sites have placed them in the area now known as the state of Wisconsin, and parts of the States of Michigan and Illinois, for 10,000 years.

The Menominee Historic Preservation Department was created by the Menominee Tribal Legislature in 1991 to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Menominee people, particularly to preserve the Menominee language which is sacred to the Menominee people. In 1999, the Historic Preservation Department received the unique status as an official designation as Tribal Historic Preservation Office from the National Park Service enabling the Menominee Tribe to protect its cultural resources.
