Have you ever made art by experimenting with melting crayons when you were a kid? This workshop is designed for anyone who would like to be introduced to the “cold wax” encaustic method. Students will learn to add a soft, beeswax mix into oil paint which is applied to an encaustic board and melted with a heat gun. Successive layers of paint can be built up and mixed media elements can also be added to the layers to create both representational and abstract pieces of art. Learn the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. In this meditative workshop, start by gluing the pieces back together, curing the vessel, and then highlighting the broken seams with powdered 14k gold or silver. Kintsugi is life’s way of saying, “nobody’s perfect.” The path is not straight. In fact, your hardest challenges, deepest wounds, and greatest fears are actually among the most beautiful, precious, and admirable parts of you. All supplies included, please do not bring your own pottery.

Cyanotypes (Printing with the Sun)

Use the sun to make beautiful cyanotypes and photograms (sun prints) of three-dimensional objects on paper. The result is a beautiful silhouette of the object placed on the photosensitive paper. We will start off using nature as our inspiration (leaves, twigs, flowers) but you are welcome to bring items to experiment with. (If the sun does not cooperate, we will use a special light indoors.)
Cancellations and Refunds
A full refund will be issued if the Kenosha Public Museum, Dinosaur Discovery Museum, or Civil War Museum cancels a workshop or camp.
All refunds requested within 72 hours of the program are subject to a $10 processing fee.
No refunds are offered on or after the day a workshop or camp begins.
Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met two days prior to the event. You will be contacted via phone or email if your event is canceled.
If unforeseen circumstances (i.e. weather, power outages, instructor illness) occur within 72 hours of the workshop or camp and the program must be canceled, the museum will do its best to reschedule or provide a voucher to take a program of a similar or same cost.
