I Had My Likeness Taken: Cartes-de-visite of the Civil War
Civil War Museum
Presented is a sampling of the cartes-de-visite (CDV) collection of the Civil War Museum of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Carte-de-visite were small, albumen photographs mounted to 2.5″ x 4″ card stock. Because they were inexpensive and durable, many Civil War soldiers had their images made on a CDV so it could be sent home to friends and family as a keepsake. Today, these photographs present a wonderful visual record of the time period.
