Designed for painters of all skill levels. Each of the six sessions will begin with a demonstration showcasing a technique of the day. Students are instructed on color mixing, application and removal, brush strokes, and instruction on the various papers and mediums in a relaxed environment devoted to the students’ personal styles. Subjects include landscapes and still life.

Have you ever made art by experimenting with melting Crayon when you were a kid? This workshop is designed for anyone who would like to be introduced to the “cold wax” encaustic method. Students will learn to add a soft, beeswax mix into oil paint which is applied to an encaustic board and melted with a heat gun. Successive layers of paint can be built up and mixed media elements can also be added to the layers to create both representational and abstract pieces of art.

This slope-sided basket is woven with natural reed for the base and dyed reed is woven for the sloped sides, separated with twined rows. A beautifully wrapped handle finishes off this basket. Several color choices will be available. The handle is wrapped with a design. Basket measures about 13″x6″ at the ends, not including handle. All supplies are included in the price.

PUBLIC Education: Artists and their Gardens

The Kenosha Public Museums are joining forces with PUBLIC Craft Brewing to bring you PUBLIC Education! This series approaches a variety of topics from dinosaurs to art to some guy who collected amputated limbs during the Civil War. For this session, join museum curator Anna Wolff to talk about artists who were inspired by the bounty and beauty (or sometimes desolation) of their gardens. Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, and Donald Judd will be discussed while sampling some of Kenosha’s finest craft beers. The first one is on us!

Whether you are a tabletop roleplayer or just love board games with detailed pieces, one of the best ways to enhance your experience at the table is with beautifully and-painted miniatures. Join award-winning miniature painter NIck Wiersum to learn basic introductory painting techniques including priming, layering, highlighting, and dry-brushing as well as paint mixing and what tools you’ll need to get started. All supplies are included in the workshop price.

Enjoy the sunshine over the lake as you practice the gentle movements of Tai Chi from the warmth of the museum’s mezzanine. Tai Chi is a slow-moving mind and body exercise, patterned after movements in nature. This class will cover some of the fundamental principles and exercises of Tai Chi, focusing on balance, breathing, and movement, while relaxing the body and mind. No experience is necessary, wear comfortable clothing for low-impact exercise.

Shibori

Shibori Furoshiki: Japanese Reusable Wrapping “Paper”

Did you know that most wrapping paper is coated in plastic which makes it impossible to recycle? Furoshiki is cloth used to wrap gifts in Japan and is both reusable and beautiful. This fabric can be used to tie packages to put under your tree without sacrificing that festive spirit. Shibori dying is traditionally an indigo dye technique used in Japan. Other colors will be available so you can customize your furoshiki. Students will be provided two squares of fabric to practice the techniques and can bring their own pre-cut fabric (must be lighter in color and 100% cotton) to dye as well. Held in conjunction with Planet or Plastic? exhibition.

Cancellations and Refunds

A full refund will be issued if the Kenosha Public Museum, Dinosaur Discovery Museum, or Civil War Museum cancels a workshop or camp.

All refunds requested within 72 hours of the program are subject to a $10 processing fee.

No refunds are offered on or after the day a workshop or camp begins.

Class cancellations can happen if enrollment minimums are not met two days prior to the event. You will be contacted via phone or email if your event is canceled.

If unforeseen circumstances (i.e. weather, power outages, instructor illness) occur within 72 hours of the workshop or camp and the program must be canceled, the museum will do its best to reschedule or provide a voucher to take a program of a similar or same cost.
