The weather has been so oppressive lately. It seems the rain has followed me all the way from Virginia.

I am Mrs. Robert Darling. I am taking my husband home to his family in Illinois. He was a lieutenant. He passed just a week ago of the bloody flux after a long illness. It is all so sad. He was a tall, strong man, and he just wasted away until there was nothing left. How will I explain to our young son that his father is gone?
