Clergyman

Why hello there. I’m Reverend Asa Bailey from the First Presbyterian Church.
I’m on my way to Indianapolis to see my sister. I hope to be appointed chaplain of one of the Indiana regiments. The officers of the regiments make the appointment, you know, and my brother is with the Eleventh Indiana.
I fear this war will be a great temptation for our young men. Being a soldier a far way from home and without the bonds of church and family – it makes it harder to follow the Lord’s good Word. Strong spirits – drink – I confess, is probably the great danger. It leads to weakness of the flesh and, the Good Lord knows, coarseness of manner.
But let that bide. I must say I enjoy these train rides, if only there was not so much dirt and smoke.
