Why, hello! Traveling by packet is always pleasant.  I do enjoy it.  I’m Reverend Asa Bailey from the First Presbyterian Church by the way.

I was chaplain to the 11th Indiana but I’ve been in Washington the past months working with the U.S. Sanitation Commission taking care of our soldier boys.

Thank God the war is over.  It was a time of great trial for the nation.  I cannot help but wonder if the cost was too much.  All the young men on both sides dead, families broken, President Lincoln assassinated.  All the souls troubled by sin.  Sad, sad, all so sad.

What will happen now with Mr. Lincoln gone? Ah, but let that bide.  It will be good to be home to see my beloved Martha, my family, and members of the congregation.  The good lord will bless us all I am sure, and the bonds of church and family will heal us and the nation.
