Wounded Soldier
Located in the Paddle Wheel Boat
Hello. I just like to watch the river and see all the towns. It is so peaceful. Seems like there never was a war.
It is good to be up North again. I was born in Indiana and my father moved to Michigan. He was a free man and a carpenter and I worked with him in his shop. I never thought I would ever go South. Then President Lincoln was elected and the war started. When they started recruiting for a U.S. Colored regiment I just had to go. Just had to go.
The Johnnies shot off my arm with a cannonball at Petersburg, and I have been ailing ever since. I wonder what will become of me. How am I going to go back to being a carpenter and helping my father? A carpenter needs both arms.
The war sure changed everything. Now I have just one arm and poor Mr. Lincoln is dead.
